Subject: Connecting Developmental Bioelectric Patterns to Infogenesis Theory
Sometimes you come across someone whose work resonates with you like a tuning fork. Michael Levin did that for me. His research into bioelectricity and intelligence in living systems felt like it rhymed with a lot of things I’d been circling around for the past few years, especially the idea that information isn’t just descriptive, but generative. So I wrote him a letter. And then I realized it was really a letter to anyone curious about how information might shape reality itself.
Dear Professor Levin,
I’m Jeff Drake, a retired IT professional now pursuing my long-standing passion for understanding the role of information in biology and consciousness. I recently watched your interview on Inner Cosmos (Ep. 111 and your work on bioelectric prepatterns resonated deeply with a framework I’ve been developing, which I call infogenesis – the idea that information is not merely descriptive, but fundamental and formative.[1]
In particular, your imaging of voltage fields that prefigure anatomical form seems conceptually aligned with the thesis of Dr. Tom Stonier, who argued that information itself drives ontological complexity. I’d be curious whether you’ve encountered Stonier’s work, and whether you’ve considered bioelectric fields in that broader informational context.
If you’re open to a brief exchange, or if you can recommend related work along these lines, I’d be deeply appreciative.
With respect and curiosity,
Jeff Drake
[1] Infogenesis is a term coined by me (Jeff Drake 2025) to describe the process by which information gives rise to structure, form, or behavior within physical systems. It treats information not merely as a descriptor of reality, but as a causal agent, an ontological force that shapes and organizes matter across scales and substrates. In this view, self-organization, development, cognition, and even time itself may emerge from the dynamics of information propagation and transformation. See: https://www.jeff-drake.com/infogenesis.
