Things That Make You Go, “Hmmm” #2

A quick thought that might pique your interest!

Have you ever picked up a book and as the story you are reading unfolds, the protagonist suddenly wishes they could talk to someone they know, and you find yourself wondering why they aren’t using their damn cellphone? Then you realize as they go in search of a phone booth that this book was written before 1983, before the age of cell phones! When this happens, suddenly the entire book appears out of date to me. I find this hard to get past unless the book is historical in nature.

A similar thing happens to me now when I watch science fiction movies or TV shows, which I love. For example, I just started watching “Alien Earth,” supposedly set in a future where space travel is commonplace. Sure, there are intelligent robots, even cyborgs, but no superintelligent AI. And I immediately found myself wondering, why is there no artificial superintelligence ( ASI)?

A small group of TV and movie writers I recently saw online were asking the same question. They all admitted that they need to start developing these types of films if they want to stay relevant.

It’s hard to believe, isn’t it, but LLMs have only been widely available for 3-4 years, yet already I find it difficult to imagine a world without them. How about you?
