Sunday, for us, was a day of rest! We thought we would treat ourselves to a quiet day in town and check the place out.
Lisa and I had one of those enjoyable travel “discovery moments”, when you decide to go look at something on the spur of the moment and it turns out to lead to some fun! IN this case, we saw a bunch of folks heading to a building behind the local Travel Information office, so we decided to see what the attraction was all about. It turned out to be the annual Wengen Cheese Festival. Yay! We were surprised to find this going on, as both of us had read just recently that it was happening the week before we were to arrive. We were bummed we were going to miss it.
We quickly got Mike and Denise and the four of us had a great time looking and sampling the different cheeses. We left and returned a few times, finally going back in the evening for dinner. I can honestly say that the Swiss roasted pork with gravy and Rosti (think American fries with onions) is a winner! The brown gravy they use (over almost everything it seems) has such a depth of flavor, I loved it!
I had a huge bratwurst the day before (had to try some Swiss sausage) and it was good, but a bit bland, or mild. I tend to like more flavor. So far, the few cheeses I’ve tried that are local, also are very mild. That goes for their beer, too, although Lisa and I found an “Amber” beer they produce that is about as close to an ale as we’re going to get. It was good!
We needed our rest today, because we had to get up early on Monday to catch the 7:20am train to the “Top of Europe” via Kleine Scheidegg. We expected this to be a fun thing to see and do, and we were right!
